     You may feel more powerful in disguise or in costume, not only because no one can recognize and you can truly be yourself but because who you are disguised as may hold a higher status and more power. That is the case for Nerissa and Portia when they dress as males and pretend to be a lawyer and a clerk. During this time period men were much more respected, and had more rights in politics which so Portia and Nerissa literally gained power with their disguise.
