SYMBOLS in The Glass Menagerie

     The fire escape and Tom's smoking symbolizes his escape. He escapes from his family, mainly his mother who nags him daily. When Amanda starts to irk Tom he quickly steps outside announcing he is going for a smoke. He knows that his mother does not like for him to smoke so it also symbolizes his rebellion, and how Tom is always just going to do what Tom wants.
