Tom snaps on his mother Amanda showing that his tolerance and patience is thinning, and it is getting harder for him to deal with her consistent nagging. Laura convinces Tom to apologize to his mother because she only means well. She does not want Tom to become a drunkard and end up like his father, and leave.
Amanda asks for Tom for help in finding a gentleman caller for his sister, Laura before he runs off. This scene is important because Tom is fed up with his mother and we know he wants to leave, so it makes us question if he'll even be able to find gentleman caller for Laura.
